Within the first act, a flurry of characters are introduced. All of them exhibit unusual qualities, such as Ed’s unanticipated xylophone playing and the Grandfather’s obsession with listening to speeches of graduating classes at a variety of colleges. Out of the entire family, Alice acts as the sanest descendant. All the characters have main interests in the play and hers is love. When Alice is first introduced, she reveals that she is falling in love with Mr. Kirby, the vice-president of Kirby & Co where she works at. Alice Sycamore is very unlike her mother, who is an avid writer with other pleasant characteristics. Alice, on the other hand, is a young girl with a job and a bit of attitude. It is this way with most of the Sycamore family. They all seem to be a bit crazy, but otherwise seem completely different in all other aspects.
